New Global Health Fellowship program to start July 2025
The West Virginia University School of Medicine will offer the first Global Health Fellowship program in West Virginia through the Department of Medicine starting in July 2025.
This one-year, immersive experience provides a unique opportunity for two fellows to rotate through resource-limited settings across the globe, including Bolivia, Ghana, Uganda and the Philippines focusing on different areas of training through localized opportunities.
Additionally, fellows will have the opportunity to engage in capacity-building initiatives, quality improvement projects and other efforts that align with their training, following best practices in global health, ethics and partnership.
“Our fellowship is unique in that we are partnered with Child Family Health International, which is a nongovernmental organization with over 30 years of experience in global health education via integration into local health systems,” Josephine Reece, M.D., director of the Internal Medicine Global Health Track and General Internal Medicine associate professor said. “The program offers university partners opportunities to learn about global health, existing health systems and social services sectors, alongside local community members and leaders.’”
Dr. Reece noted that upon completing their training, fellows can pursue careers in academic medicine or practice in rural or critical access systems, or even free clinics, where they can use not only their clinical skills of working with limited options, but also their new knowledge to develop research and educational projects.
Fellows will be required to complete WVU’s Clinical Tropical Medicine course during their fellowship. It is an American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene accredited course that will allow fellows to take the Tropical Medicine board certifying exam on completion of the fellowship.
Complete information about the fellowship opportunity can be found on the program’s website.
