IRU Celebrates One Year of Patient-Centered Care
Mark your calendars: the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit (IRU) is celebrating its first anniversary with an event on Aug. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Located within J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, the IRU provides intensive, team-based rehabilitation for patients recovering from stroke, brain injury, orthopedic surgery, spinal cord injury, and other complex conditions. Because the unit is integrated within the WVU Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, patients have access to leading specialists and the latest evidence-based care, all in one place.
Since admitting its first patient on May 13, 2025, the IRU has cared for nearly 200 patients — 85 admissions in 2025 and 107 so far in 2026, already surpassing last year's total. Stroke recovery has made up the largest share of that care, followed by trauma and traumatic brain injuries, orthopedic conditions and amputations, and spinal cord injuries. That caseload reflects a full year of close collaboration with referring teams across WVU Medicine, with Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Trauma Blue standing out as the IRU's top three referral sources.
Join us in celebrating a year of dedicated care and the team that made it possible. The celebration will be held at the Bruce McClymonds Conference Center, located on the first floor of the WVU Heart and Vascular Institute. RSVP here.
